Saxophone Master Class: Sound Like a Professional

What is it about the playing of a great jazz saxophonist that makes it sound so fluid and professional? Tone, intonation, time and note choice are all important, but they are not enough. In this workshop we observe and discuss in close detail many of
the choices of note attack, emphasis, contour, duration, and release that differentiate a master from an average player. Students are critiqued and interactively guided by the instructor to overcome their individual obstacles. Participation is encouraged but not required. Attendees will be given a short etude to play for critique — available, for those who wish to prepare it in advance, at http://antonjazz.com/study.

John Hollenbeck Composition Workshop

You want to compose!
How do you start?
How do you develop material?
How do you finish?
These and other important questions will be answered and discussed in-depth.
All musicians with a rudimentary knowledge of music theory are invited! Participants can bring pieces that they have started. John will also discuss and his use some of his compositions as examples.
Building on a wealth of experience in jazz and world styles as well as a deep interest in contemporary composition and spiritual practice, John Hollenbeck’s musical language is as accessible and expressive as it is advanced. After receiving degrees in percussion (B.M.) and jazz composition (M.M.) from the Eastman School of Music, Hollenbeck moved to New York City in the early 1990's. He has worked with many of the world's leading musicians in jazz (Bob Brookmeyer, Fred Hersch, Tony Malaby, the Village Vanguard Orchestra, Kenny Wheeler), world music (Pablo Ziegler), and new music (Meredith Monk). John focuses extensively on composing for and leading the critically acclaimed Claudia Quintet and his two-time Grammy-Nominated Large Ensemble. In 2007 he was awarded the prestigious Guggenheim Fellowship. John’s recent works include commissions by the Bang on a Can and the People’s Commissioning Fund; the Ethos Percussion Group funded by the Jerome Foundation; Youngstown State University; the Painted Bride Art Center of Philadelphia; the Orchestre National de Jazz funded by the Chamber Music America French-American Jazz Exchange; Frankfurt’s hr-BigBand; the University of Arts, Philadelphia; and the University of Rochester, New York.

A close look at the harmonic structure of the Henry Mancini standard, with many practical applications. Discussion of the chord progression on both a micro level (how each chord leads to the next) and a big-picture level (how they all work together to form a coherent song). Suggestions are given for ways to mentally simplify the song’s structure, as well as ways to embellish the chord changes. Students optionally improvise over the song and are critiqued, with recommendations given for a direct path to improvement. Bring your instrument (optional).
